Question:

motor running on 120v 50 hz ac insted of 60 hz ac?

Hi,I planning to buy a aquarium filter form ebay which works on 120vac 60hz . i stay in India where voltage is 220vac 50hz .this filter is having a permanent magnet rotor. please help me can this motor work if i use a voltage converter (220v to 120v ) .Is frequency mismatch does not matter please help

Answer:

'Synchronous motors' designed to run on AC are designed to run at a fixed speed relative to the mains frequency. A small (as the motor sounds like it will be of small power rating) transformer will get the voltage right. If it IS 'synchronous' it WILL run slower. If the motor has permanent magnets, it may not be 'synchronous', but function more like a small DC permanent motor (it may have internal diodes), and its speed may thus vary with voltage, not supply frequency. If it does run slower on the slower 50Hz however - this may cause you problems as it may not be as efficient pumping at the slower speed - will this then move enough air for your purposes? I'd really recommend you trying to find something more in keeping with the local power supply type.
It will still run on 50 hz power. It will just run at a slightly slower speed. Not slow enough to make much difference.
for many AC autos, you will would desire to de-fee the utilized voltage fee on account that at a decrease utilized frequency the magnetic flux interior the gadget will strengthen that may strengthen currents interior the windings. some autos are designed for a 50/60Hz variety and artwork advantageous on the two frequencies, yet examine with the motor nameplate or producer. So, for a gadget designed for 60Hz engaged on a 50Hz device, set the utilized voltage to (50/60)*rated_voltage. OR, there are sturdy-state induction motor drives available which could take single section AC at 50Hz and convert that to a variable frequency voltage on the output (i think of you are able to variety the voltage fee as nicely). So purely alter the output to 60 Hz. this may be a plausible answer, albeit a sprint intense priced and there will be some ability losses interior the force.
