Question:

Motorcycle tyre (tire) repairs?

Some people say that plugs are not a god idea, some say depending on the type of plug, they are just as good as a standard tyre.1.Pluged from the inside using a mushroom fitting i have been told is the best possible repair yet shops always say its a temporary measure. because they want you to buy a new ?120 tyre? possibly?2. Plugged from outside is just to get you off the road side is little more ‘quick fix‘ and with 38psi pushin on it will cause alot of stress with flex.Alot of people say that the plugs are not a good idea but have tehy tried them? people i spoken too so far have tried them and say they are fine. but i not spoken to anyone yet who have tried them and had a problem. sureley cant of killed all of them? are people jsut little catious using them so give there opinion? help me out guys. thanks alot in advance

Answer:

The repair shops aren't the only ones who will tell you that a mushroom plug is a temp repair. The manufacturer of the kits tells you that. Use whatever type of plug you have to get you home, then have the tire patched from the inside, unless it's close to being worn out, then just get a new one. I once plugged a tire that still had good tread. Used the plug and glue type. Rode it for 3,000 miles with the plug in it. Maybe I was just lucky?
If the tire has a tube in it, then all you need to do is replace the tube. If the tire is tubeless, then you will need to patch and/or plug it. If the nail is straight in the tire (that means not entering on an angle or from the sidewall), then you can use a plug/patch combo. This is simply a patch with a plug in the center, which you repair from the inside of the tire. If the nail in angled, then you can only use a patch. Plugs don't work very well when the hole is on the sidewall, but you may still use a separate plug and separate patch on the inside. Purchase a good patch repair kit from you local dealer or auto store and follow the instructions to a tee. Then it'll most likely hold up for the rest of the life of the tire.
tire plugs are not unsafe, the problem is that unless you put a patch over them on the inside of the tire it will eventually leak. Of course it depends on the size location of the hole. A sidewall puncture weakens the structure of a tire the tire should be replaced. I plugged a tire on a long trip once, got to a town patched from the inside it was fine until all the tread was gone from normal wear.
