Question:

my car alarm randomly goes on then turns off for no reason?

my car is old, but it has NEVER done this before. its a 2000 VW turbo beetle. i just had the battery replaced about a week ago. and while i was at work tonight a coworker came in froma smoke break and told me my alarm was going off, we walked out back and it had stopped. 2 minutes later it did it again. i went out unlocked the car and locked it and i was walking away and it went off again. i opened the car and locked it an by the time i got back to the stairs it went off again but it would last less than 30 seconds before it stopsdrove home parked in the driveway. ive been home about an hour and it just did it again.any ideas as to why??

Answer:

Had the same problem with my Rolls Royce. You're the victim of a very determined car thief. He's obviously an amateur since the alarm has gone off so many times, but he probably needs it for a gang initiation. When it happened to me i tried to deter the thief by installing some hi-tech security system, BIG mistake. After two weeks my neighbors had the cops at my door for noise violations. $180 in penalties. I decided to make it a bit easier for the little rascal, left the door open with the key in the ignition. also cranked up some lil' wayne on the stereo. It worked. I don't have a car anymore, but I get some great sleep. And I'd take that over mobility any day.
Could be the sensor is to sensitive. I know this is sounds weird.but I know that sometimes theives will set off the alarm several times, which in turn forces owners to turn off the alarm so as not to bother neighborswhich then leaves the car possibly unlocked.
Been there, fixed that. The driver door microswitch is failing in the ON - OPEN position, causing the alarm to go off. Temp. solution until you get a new actuator is to lock car from passenger door with the interior button. The driver door has a manual lock out to prevent you from locking it with the door open or using the inside switch.
