Question:

My cat doesn't like to be on the sofa?

We rescued her from a rescue home (she's 6) and she doesn't like to go on the couch. Whenever we place her on the couch she runs away under my bed. :/ I want her on the couch.

Answer:

Maybe she was abused in a former home, if possible, and it related to her being on the couch. Some people don't want their pets on the couch, and she was probably trained, or abused potentially, if and when she got on the couch so that way she wouldn't. I say you might possibly be able to train her otherwise. Start with treats by getting her closer to the couch and eventually up on the couch for her to eat it, and reward her. She may end up growing to understand that she is allowed on the couch now.
Most people try to keep their cats off the sofa! And her prior family may have been like that. Do you have a cat bed or lounger for her that you can put near the sofa? See if she'll use that and maybe try to tempt her with treats onto the sofa.
You can't make cats lay on or want to be on a piece of furniture. They sit or sleep where they want. You can try offering treats on the sofa to encourage her to be there. But if she was from a rescue home, she may have been hit or yelled at for being on the couch.
Maybe the previous owner punished the cat for being on the couch. Leave her alone and maybe she will realize that she is allowed there. My cats wont come into my bedroom any more then a few feet from the door. They panic if I even put them on the bed so I don't do that. If they want something the are fine sitting in the doorway. You can try tempting her with Whiskas Temptations treats. Give her a few in front of the couch and see if she will put her paws on the couch to reach more. Eventually she may jump on the couch. Limit the treats to 15 a day as directed.
Never force any thing on a cat or dog on what you want. It is probably that the previous owners did not want the cat on the sofa and punished it when it was on the sofa. ( I had a cat like that. Until the cat saw the other cat, Patches, on the sofa and not being punished, did Amelia finally start sleeping on the sofa and in the bed with me.)Amelia was a real comfort when I broke my big toe. The cat would sleep on top of my foot in trying to heal and keep it warm. (The rest of my foot was a mess, besides the toe.) You might want to have spread a newspaper down on the floor and place some cat nip for the cat to chill -out for a while and get use to You, your family, and new home. The cat needs time to adjust to its new home. Let the cat determine when it wants to be on the sofa or bed .
