Question:

My cat found a hiding spot in the attic, and now I'm scared he has the fiberglass insulation on him?

Hi everybody! I witnessed my kitty coming out from the garage one day and when I went to look - sure enough he had climbed up the boxes and moved the ceiling bored to find a hidey spot on the attic - I also noticed he had some scabs and I've had him for years and know this is not a flea allergy, when I climbed into the attic myself I noticed the fiberglass insulation everywhere and I think that is what's making him so itchy. My cat isn't trained for baths - and trying to give him one now would probably traumatize him - I don't know how to get the fiberglass off or what kind of crazy effects could happen when he cleans himselfI'm taking him to a vet next week, but do you guys have any advice?

Answer:

Need to know what it's made of, before I can tell you how to clean it.
Ingesting fiberglass in a worst case, could cause internal bleedingDo you have a way to keep him out of that spot in the future? Put on gloves to protect yourself, and brush him wellThen run a damp washcloth over his fur to pick up more remnants of the fiberglassI bathe my cats by running a small amount of water into the tub, putting on a one piece swimsuit, and then picking kitty up and climbing into the tub with them in my armsThey don't get immersed in the water, they sit on my lap while I sponge them, and so far none of them have been traumatized by being bathed that wayOnce he's stopped form going back to his hidey hole and the fiberglass is removed from his fur, with any luck his skin lesions will start improvingIf he's miserable from them he may need to stop by the vet's office before his appointment to get a shot of cortisone. He should also see the vet sooner if he vomits or poops out any blood, if he vomits what looks like coffee grounds, or if any of his stools look black (like tar.) Hope he feels better soon.
