Question:

My cornsnake laid eggs a couple days ago?

There are 8 eggs in the tank, the snake does not lay near them, is this normal? Do you think they are fertile eggs and what do I need to do with them if anything? How long would it take for them to hatch?

Answer:

A chicken that has laid her first egg will not be upset about it being taken away, it is just getting used to laying and will become more regular over the next few weeks. You may also get small eggs, soft shelled eggs or strange shape eggs while her body is developing. It takes 26 hours for an egg to be made, so you used get eggs 6 days a week in the first couple of years of life. They will stop when moulting, or when it's particularly hot or cold. They also lay less in winter because there is less day light which is needed for egg production, but you can use artificial light if wanted.
Is there a male snake present? If not chances are the eggs are duds. If there is then make sure to keep them warm with a light - straight away.
If your eggs are fertile, you need to get them in an incubator A.S.A.P. They need to be set in moist Vermiculite and you gotta keep the humidity up in the 90% area. The temperature should be in the 82-86 degree area. You'll be able to tell if your eggs are fertile or not because after about a week they will start to turn rotton and yellow and start to smell really bad. Throw those out. When handling your eggs, be careful to not turn them over in any way, shape or form, because you will kill the embryo inside and the baby will not hatch. Hope that helps and good luck!
