Question:

My husband bought me a new expensive sofa, but the cat keeps trying to claw it...?

It's a really nice sofa. It's an Ashley corduroy motivation sofa and it's has power recliners. The cat has attacked the cord and unplugged it once already, and he has tried to claw the sides and back of the sofa, but I shoo him away whenever I catch him. I have never had a husband, cat, or new sofa before in my life.

Answer:

Try different scratch posts. Certain cats love certain materials. Theres cardboard, sisal, carpet, and various others. If he doesnt seem to use one all that much, try another. Also, theres ones with catnip built in, or catnip sprays to attract them to the posts. You can use things like sticky paws, which is a sticky strip you put on the furniture or what have you [cats cant stand the sticky feeling on their paws]. You can try X mats, which are plastic x's with spike like nubs on them. And, if all else fails, you can try the method that i think is mean. Spray him with water when he does it. Some people like this method, i say its cruel. But, im giving you all your options, and letting you decide for yourself.
some cats you can train not to do it using spray bottle of water when caught or punishing or using furniture padding but mostly since it is a normal behavior to use claws your best bet if you cant get cat use a scratching board or toy and cant leave in a shut room while gone and only have cat out when someone home and can keep constant watch and try train then only other way is have it declawed by vet.good luck
I am going to suggest a blend of carpet/sisal for scratching, as some cats either love it, or ignore it. I am providing a link, but it is available many places. Bitter Apple (sold in pet stores) for coating wires usually works. And double sided sticky tape for scratching is a good for discouraging your kitten. And dusting areas with talcum will cover up their scent they left from their paws, and also offends their nose. As far as the mattress box springs, for him it is a game. He is on his back when he does it, and is having fun. At least it hardly ever shows. It won't hurt the mattress box spring, but sure is annoying if he does it at 5 AM. Hiss at him when he does that.
