Question:

My son wets the bed, what should I do, diapers, plastic sheet, make him do his laundry?

Whats the best way of approaching this??

Answer:

If your son just started wetting the bed at 14 and had never had a problem with it in the past. Take him to another doctor for a 2nd opinion. When someone starts wetting the bed out of the blue. That usually indicates some sort of medical problem. As for using diaper on him. At 14. That should be his choice to wear them. You should ask him if he would be willing to wear Goodnites or Underjams ( these are bed wetter pants for older kids). At the very least there should be a plastic sheet on his bed.
I would put him in diapers or goodnites sleep shorts which are like boxers. This way you avoid laundry and still take care of the problem
My younger brother use to wet the bed for a long time (till he was about 7 or 8 i think), my mum started off using a plastic sheet underneath and she used cot sheets for a while so it was easier to change. Then she started using pullups and they seemed to work fine, and he didnt mind using them
Do not humiliate him with diapers, doing his own laundry and punishment. He could have a small bladder and just can't hold it. Perhaps you could restrict his drinking liquids before bedtime. Have you had him checked by a doctor? He may even have a urinary tract infection. Make sure it's not a medical problem before your try anything else.
I was a very late bed wetter. Your son needs to be told that many boys and girls wet their beds even when they are teenagers. It is just something that happens to some boys and girls as they grow up. I would have liked something like the pull up pants that substitute for a diaper and now are available for children and adults. They would be good to have plus an absorbent pad to put on the bottom sheet to protect the mattress. If he doesn't wet then he can reuse the pull up the next night. If all you can find are diapers, then he needs to know that even mommies, and daddies, and older brothers and sisters use them if they have bed wetting, or wetting problems. He needs to know that he is still a big boy and will out grow wetting the bed. Now you could be talking about a teenager. They wet the bed too. If it is infrequent then they will out grow it in time. Even they would likely prefer to be in a diaper or pull up then awaking in a soggy wet bed. If the wetting is very frequent then the child needs a doctors visit for help.
