Question:

Need help from ceiling fan/wiring expert??

How do I wire this ceiling fan? There are two house wires coming from ceiling-one white, one black. There are three wires on the fan- one white, one solid black, and one black with a white stripe. There is one light switch in the room that will be operating the fan/light (the fan has a light on it). I wired the white wire to the white wire, the black wire with the white stripe to the black wire, didn't know where to wire the solid black wire to. Now only the light part of the fan works, the fan does not work at all. Where does the solid black wire go? I need both the fan and the light to work.

Answer:

The solid black wire on the fan is power to the fan motor. The black wire with the white stripe is power to the fan light. I assume that your fan has two pull chains. One turns the light on and off, the other turns fan motor on, and repeated pulls selects speed. You have three choices; 1.You can connect the black wire from the ceiling, the black wire from the fan and the black/white wire from the fan all together using an electrical wire nut. Now when you turn on the wall switch, both the light and fan have power and you can control them by pulling the chains. When you turn off the wall switch, you will not have light or fan. 2. You can wire as in 1 above and also connect the two wires which currently go to the wall switch. This will supply power continuously to the fan/light. You will operate the fan/lite entirely by the pull chains on the fan. The wall switch will now be inoperative. 3. You can buy a remote control fan unit at Lowes or Home Depot for around $30. This unit consists of two pieces, one goes into the fan, the other replaces your current wall switch. The wall mounted unit has buttons to turn on the fan light as well as to select the fan speed. It works by radio control similar to a garage door opener. This unit will not work with a hugger type fan mount.
white to white-neutral connection....wire the 3 other wires together...when the light switch is on power will flow to fan and light(one wire if for one the other is for the other) this will enable you to use the fan and light byh the pull cords. If you have multiple light switches, wire both the fan and light to seperate switches will enable you to control it from the switch instead of the pull cords.
The black and black/white are the hot legs for the fan and the light kit.If you have separate switches on your wall then you could operate the fan and the light without having to pull the string. On my house all the switches are that way.Up in the ceiling there is an additional hot wire.It is colored red.
Simple ------- wire-nut the 2 white wires together then wire-nut the solid black(from the house side)to both the black wire and black wire with white trace together. In many ceiling fans they use a blue wire for the fan light, but it appears they are using the black wire /with white trace for the fan light in this case.
Are you located in the USA? I am puzzled by one thing and that is the red wire. Usually ceiling fans have a black wire for the fan and a blue wire for the light fixture. But if you are in the US, this sounds correct and it should work just fine. Normally a 12-3 or a 14-3 wire would be used but there is not problem with what you have done. Edit: You are correct, you simply have an extra white wire. No problem at all.
