Needle Punch Embroidery?

I am just getting started, on learning to do Needle Punch EmbroideryI have bought my needle, and embroidery hoop alreadyI have a few questionsWhat types of fabric work best besides, Weavers Cloth?should I be backing it with anything to keep the threads in???Also, what type of Thread or Yarn works best for this type of embroidering? I've been looking online, and there seems like there is many kinds to choose from.Thanks!!!!
