Question:

i need help figuring out how many boxes of tile i need?

Ok the room is 12X16 thats 192 square foot right? well each box of tile is 30 square foot how many boxes would i need

Answer:

Tile size, and layout would be required to determine wastage; but, for a six inch or smaller tile, seven boxes (210 sq. ft.) should suffice for even significant wastage.
192/30 = 6.4 boxes, but it's rarely that simple. Depending on layout and size of tile (diagonal, border, number of obstacles etc.) you need to figure waste %. Say 10-20%. Waste % really depends a lot on how intricate a pattern and how big of tile it is, it will change the equation a lot (smaller tile less so than larger). 192x1.10= 211 = 7 192x1.20=230 or 230/30 = 7.6 Say 8 to be safe or 9 and return one.
I would figure about 15% waste/breakage/discoloration. So my math would go 12*16=192+15%=220sqft/30=7.33boxes It really depends on the layout of the room and if your going to have a lot of cuts, to either center your layout on a door etc. Buy eight boxes, so you don't get almost done and come up short and have to run back to the store and get more. If you have an un-broken box you should be able to return it.
Allow 10% for waste. That would mean 192+19.2=211.2 211.2/30=7.04 boxes Buy 7.
192/32 =6.4 You'll probably have to buy seven boxes, but you'll use less than 6 1/2.
