okay. i'm trying to convince my parents to get me a motorcycle when we move back to california. they are leaning more towards yes. butttt my mom is still worried about safety. the nozzle has a section called the throat. this is where the energy of the flow is changed from low speed high flow in the wide hose to high speed low flow in the nozzle. Both are equal. However, the velocity (speed) is dramatically higher generating the action. the flow pushes on the fireman with the force equal to the kinetic energy of the flow. This is the same fluid dynamic that turns tubines in jets and power stations.
Yes there is a real danger: I remember when I managed a polymerisation plant producing acrylic copolymers: There was a serious danger of volatile matter from some monomers - if I remember correctly - methyl methacrylate in particular, reacting with the contact lens and this could result in it fusing to the eye. There were large signs posted around the reactors and storage areas of this monomer warning of this danger. I do not think that it is sufficient to try and add safety goggles over the face. I would suggest that in case of exposure to these fumes the technician should wear conventional glass lenses spectacles or non- acrylic contact lenses. But always consult a properly qualified contact lens specialist for proper advice.
