Question:

Old ceramic electric outlets?

How rare is it to find ceramic outlets in a early 1900 home. We were replacing a outlet for the use of my computer and the outlet I removed was ceramic. Should I worry?

Answer:

All it is , is a electrical outlet. The ceramic plugs in the 50's is the heavy duty plugs. Just replace it with the plastics they have in hardware store.
whats the issue with a ceramic outlet? thae were around for years before the newer type of materials appeared
No. They are tinted or polarized.
I have an old house too You should worry! Its not the ceramic insulation that wears out it is the contacts inside! What does your wiring look like! !00 years ago they didn't have high current draw appliances like toaster ovens, microwaves coffee pots and hair dryers and the insulation on the old wires has probably all ready failed-call an electrician before you have a problem-old houses are great but you have to update things to be safe-good luck with your old house!
