Question:

Older home insulation question?

We just bought an older home (built in 1930) and I am not exactly what to do about insulation for the winterIt is really cold already and it is only OctoberOur attic is warmer than our living areasIs this a good thing or a bad thing? Does the mean we need more insulation in our living spaces or more insulation in the attic? Where else should I insulate?

Answer:

it depends! I use heat protectant spray with a 400 degree flat iron, and my hair still looks okayJust be sure to use something to protect it.
Unfortunately yesI've been doing it for a year now and my hair is weakMeaning that it falls like crazy! Before doing it often, make sure it's something you really want to do.
yep so will blow-drying your hairjust go to your local drugstore or a salon and buy some thermal proctectant products
Ya it willJust buy some spray that will protect your hair and spray it on before you straighten it and you will be fine!
do you have your furnace on already? If so, then your attic should NOT be warmer than your living spacesI too own an old home built around 1910We have found that the outside walls to our home are not insulated at allThat was common practice in the old days of plaster wallsIf you have the money, I would look into the blow in isulation for your wallsThe cost is minimal, and at Home Depot, if you spend i think 100 on the insulation, they let you borrow the blow in thing for free In older homes, alot of times, you only need to go into your attic and blow it down between the walls that wayWhat kind of insualtion do you have in your attic? If it's pretty old, like ours was, you will save so much money by reinsulating your attic as wellWe did ours with R19 the first year we moved in, we spent around 600 on the insulation, but over 2 months, it had paid for itself with our gas heating billDont underestimate the savings of insulationEdit- In response to the below personWhen you insulate your attic, you are actually insulating the living area BELOW the atticYou are keeping the cold and heat from your attic(and the outside) from getting into the downstairs, living area of your home.
