Question:

On a 155cc motorcycle what does the numbers on the tires and interior rubber mean?

I changed my worn 3.00-17 rear exterior tire with a Dunlop Low Profile TT900 series tire having 80/80-17 markings but still used the old rubber interior of 3.00-17. I experienced two flat tires on separate occasions each time I had a backrider with me. Shop guy suggested I use a 2.50-17 rubber interior because the 3.00-17 interior inside the 80/80-17 exterior tire is too big. My question is, what do these numbers on the tires and interiors mean? And do I really have to select a more larger tire for the rear wheel than in the front or could I use the same wheel size for both front the rear of my motorcycle?

Answer:

The numbers are the tire size, but you knew that already. I recommend that you stay with the recommended tire size, especially on a scooter. If you make the front tire larger, your speedometer will be off, and if you increase the size of the rear tire, you will have problems climbing hills, and also they may rub in the wells. I am assuming when you say tire interiors, you are saying tubes. It is best to replace the tubes with the tires, and they should be the same size as the tires. Look up what tires belong on the bike, and then go for better quality tires. Get Pirelli SL26 tires of the correct size, pump them up to the proper pressure, and enjoy the improved handling!
OK this is easy the numbers the old way of describing tire sizes is the 3.00-17 and that means the tire has a cross section of 3 inches and is on a 17 inch rim . now the New way of describing tires is in metric and in millimeters. So to get a replacement tire for you bike take the 3.00 inch size and multiply by 25.4 that equals 76mm all the English measured tires are 80% tires meaning that the sidewall heigth is 80% of the cross section of the tire . so the metric conversion of your tire would be 80/80/17 as for a larger size on the rear compared to the front tire. look in your owners manual or on the sticker on the bike for the proper sizing for front and rear . there are some older bikes that had the same size tire on the front and rear . my 72 Moto Guzzi has the same size front and rear , so its not unusual . as for the Interior tire or tube the convention is to have it slightly smaller than the tire size since it is inside the tire . you can also look on the tube and it should say what range of tire it was designed for. hope this helps.
the 2.50 and the 3.00 is the width of the rim. 80/80 is a diffrent form of measuring it. The 17 is how big around the rim is. When you say interior rubber do you mean the tube? I think you should use a 2.50-3.00-17 heavy duty tube and also check the spokes to see if they are tight and also check the rim band for damage!
