Question:

Opinions on two sofas matching in same room?

I need to buy two new sofas, a chair and one large ottoman for my great room. It is a large room with high ceilings, so space is not an issue. I think I want the sofa styles to match, but should I also match the fabric? The only other upholstery I have in the room (at the moment) is a glass table w/four chairs. I typically like clean lines of a contemporary style.

Answer:

I like the pure line of the klippan love seat sofa from ikea. they are design, elegant, contemporary and cheap. I have a pair a home. Check it out!
I would match the two sofas, but maybe choose different fabrics or styles for the other two pieces.
I would suggest matching two out of the three items you want to buy. Either A sofa and the chair/ottoman should match or both sofas with the chair in complimentary color....
I'm not a fan of all matching furniture in a room. It looks to much like a store display. I would get a sofa with a print you like (it doesn't have to be a huge print like all over florals, even a two-colored lined sofa) and a solid colored sofa to match. Then put you printed pillows on the solid sofa and the solid pillows on the printed sofa. Your chair could be either solid or printed as long as it's by the opposite couch, same with the ottoman. Or the chair and ottoman could be a different solid color if you chose a couch with more than two colors in it!
With that much furniture, if everything matched, it would be exceedingly boring. Especially for contemporary. Matching furniture is very outdated as well. The style for today is an eclectic feel. In fact, I was in a design office the other day that mixed rustic, traditional and contemporary in a retro-fit loft space and it was fabulous! Think outside the box with the pieces you put together. That said, don't make everything mis-matched. Match the sofas, but get a different style and color chair and ottoman. Match the side tables, but get a different coffee table, or do something totally different such as an ottoman coffee table. CB2 is a great site for eclectic contemporary ideas.
