Study the history of the White Sands Testing Grounds in New Mexico where fusion did indeed turn a lot of the gypsum sand into fused chunks of glass. But, as has already been mentioned, this would just occur in and around the point of impact. FYI: I was stationed years ago at White Sands where, if you went into the local town of Alamogordo, you could find chucks of pure fused glass in the local shops for sale. Although it was probably illegal for the local merchants to sell those souvenirs they did anyway.
I prefer a full face helmet. I use photo sensitive motorcycle sun glasses that darken or lighten automatically. I use a clear face shield. I can only describe these sunglasses as almost like goggles that look like sunglasses. They have a foam pad on the inside of the frame that keep out wind and debris. I found these in the automotive section at Wal Mart for about $25. With these style motorcycle sunglasses I can put my face shield up while traveling slowly on hot days for a little air. My eyes are still protected while moving. They get pretty dark in the sunlight and pretty light as the sun goes down. They get light enough that I can wear them at night. True story why I prefer a full face helmet. Years ago a friend of mine needed a helmet and I lent him mine. At the time it was a very good helmet. Arther Fulmer full face. After I lent him the helmet, he got drunk, I didn't know he was going to be drinking. He was going about 45 MPH when he hit a curb. He flew over the handlebars Superman style. He took out a 15 MPH speed limit sign on a 4X4 pole by hitting it face first. The only injuries he had was that he broke both kneecaps when he went over the handlebars. He also had a tiny scratch on the bridge of his nose. You can only imagine what a crash like this would have done to his face if he as wearing an open face helmet. The helmet did its job but was destroyed. What sucked is that my friend never offered to pay for my expensive helmet.
