Question:

Plastic vs. Paper plates?

Since I have become more environmentally aware, I seem to be falling more into environment pitfalls. Here is my dilemma when I want something to eat, what is more economically friendly plastic or paper? Assuming (which I do) recycle the paper, and assuming I reuse the plastic plate but wash it. If you can not give me a direct black and white answer, could you please instead give me pros and cons. Thank you!

Answer:

I try to eliminate disposable items in my life whenever possible. I purchased a set of durable plastic plates a few years ago for outside use. In general I try to avoid plastic if there is any other alternative. It will never return to the earth in a non toxic way. There are many alternatives popping up to both. The phrase I look for is compostable. Some papers are better than others, I look for recycled and biodegradable. There are also plant starch plates which are compostable.
I would use plastic plates. This is because it is way more sturdy and doesnt get worn out like paper plates I'm not saying paper plates dont have their advantages too, when you are eating oily food such as fried chicken or something, it helps absorb some of the oil making it healthier for you.

Plastic Paper Plates
Plastic is made from oil! Paper is renewable and will decay. Plastic can sit for years without decaying.
