Question:

Plastic water bottles, leching and cancer?

I have heard the heard plastic Nalgene bottles could have been recalled because they leak some kind of chemical in your water that can cause cancer. They also say that you shouldn't store water in plastic bottles. I have a water cooler (the 5 gallon kind) that stores water in a 5 gallon plastic jug, is that safe?

Answer:

Water bottles like the ones you usually carry in a purse, backpack, etc. are not good to use over and over again because they are made with cheaper plastics and they begin to break down and then they can leach out chemicals. However the 5 gallon jugs are made of a more dense plastic that doesn't break down as easily (although they may need to be replaced eventually). I have not heard anything about Nalgene water bottles. But if you are interested in reading about them, I googled it and found this article: trusted.md/blog/vreni_gurd/2007/03/29/plastic_water_bottles I hope this helps you! ( :
I stay away from plastics that contain pvc's (poly vinyl chlorides). They do leach into some foods and are carcinogens. Containers that are labeled with a number 3 in the center of the recycle symbol contain pvc's. You can search on the web for more information. Even some cosmetics contain plasticizers that are not healthy.
The only thing I have heard is that you shouldn't freeze bottled water b/c when it freezes, it releases a chemical from the plastic that can cause cancer.
plastic bottles are known that they produce extreme cancerous chemicals when the bottle is under heating
All plastics emit chemicals, yes, even the 5 gal container. The risks are very low, although some folks don't wish to chance it at all. People who wish to choose an alternative container use glass based containers. It's completely neutral and ideal for your health. Of course, the problem is that it's glass, a fragile material. For those who abuse their containers, there are metal containers available although some folks can't handle the metal taste.
