Question:

Please Help with my Juice Fast? What Additives can i take?

I have recently started a juice fast and today is my fourth day. It will go for as long as I have the money to buy the produce. I might go for 30 days but at the least, it will be 7-10 days maybe 14.Some people say to use additives like green algae, hemp oil, ground up flax seeds and such. I would htink that two tablespoons of ground up flax seeds is like eating something bulky that my system will have to digest?? Right? I just need to know what kind of additives would be beneficial when on a juice fast or if I should just drink the juice plain. Also, please tell me what kind of a juicer you have as our champion is old and does not get enough juice. I want to replace it with something like the solostar II which I have read a lot of good reports on. They say that Norwalk Press is the best but that is WAY too much money. I can barely afford my produce right now. Thanks,Shawn

Answer:

I've read that when fasting you should avoid vitamins and particularly oil-soluble vitamins. That being said, I think the additives you mention sound ok, except that I've never tried hemp oil. I would probably stick with the flax seeds for the EFAs--its use is well-established. The little bit of fiber won't hurt. Don't get too much of the green algae supplement until you make sure you like it. I got a bottle of powdered spirulina a few years back and found that it was absolutely unpalatable. Now I stick to powdered barley grass--my favorite is the original Green Magma. You can drink it straight mixed into a glass of water in the place of one of your juice meals. My juicer is a Samson GB-9001. It runs about $210-$220 and I love it. It's very powerful and useful for cooking tasks as well as juicing--I use it when I can tomato sauce and whenever I make Indian foods. It does a great job of juicing vegetables, but isn't recommended if you're juicing exclusively something hard like carrots. When juicing carrots you need to alternate the carrots with something leafy so that carrots get caught up in the auger. It's great for juicing leafy greens. Clean-up is a breeze, just disassemble and toss all the parts into the dishwasher. The Solostar II looks very similar to the Samson, except the Solostar is a few bucks more. I've never used the Solostar, but I can say that I'm pleased as punch with the Samson. Oh and make sure that you're doing the recommended internal cleansing while you're on this extended fast. It's important since without solid foods you aren't eliminating.
