Question:

Please recommend a rug for a infant/toddler?

Hi, I am considering byung a rug for the living room where my child will be able to play/crall in couple of months. What do you recommend. Quality? Type? Any suggestions? What not to buy? Thanks

Answer:

Hand braided rag rug, as it will not contain any nasty chemicals.
This rug from lowe's is very soft, and easy to clean. Darker rugs would show spit up and drool stains easier. I also agree with the rug grip underneath. It will prevent a possibly very painful slip!
I would suggest something very soft, easy to clean and large. I wouldn't go with braided. Try K-mart, they have some nice rugs at decent prices and if the baby spills or spits up then you don't have to worry about how much money you spent on it. Make sure the backing is one that doesn't slip. If it does, make sure you buy the stuff the put on the back to keep it from sliding. I saw that at walmart the other day.
If the reason is that you have hard wood floors, make sure to buy a rug undermat or gripper so no one slips falls. I would not go light in color as sippy cups even non spill do leak a bit, Try somewhere like Ikea or Target if it is only temp so you can get decent quality at a low price, also Sams Costco sometimes have plain area rugs for 30 to 40 dollars they are about 6x8
Anything stain proof, for starters! Easily washable, non stick on the bottom and look at the labels for any toxicity warnings. Stay away from rugs that can pill (you know, those little bally things you get when you wash a sweater), or yarn because if your baby pulls at them, and swallows them, they're easy to choke on. My dog does it all the time, and then hacks for three hours to get it out. Check Ikea, they're super kid friendly. Any department store should be able to help, if you tell them it's specifically for areas where kids will be playing.
