Question:

Pontiac brake problems?

I have a 2005 Pontiac Grand Am GT and have been hearing this crunching/grinding noise when I press the brake pedal in. I have replaced the brakes and rotors on all 4 wheels several times with high quality pads/rotors (not the cheap stuff professionally done at a garage, not by me). But I am still hearing this noise, the garage tells me that it is the calipers, because they are aluminum and wear quickly. Has anyone else had this problem? Any cures? Are there aftermarket calipers available that are better quality than oem calipers? It‘s gotten really bad now, I‘m hearing it more frequenly and more loudly than before. I‘d appreciate it if anyone has any intelligent information to share!

Answer:

aftermarket calipers are generally going to be inexpensive can be purchased with lifetime warranties, so you don't have to buy new ones every time if they happen to fail. Personally, I'd have a different shop take a look at your brake system if your current shop. An honest mechanic/technician isn't going to tell you that aluminum calipers wear out quickly. A caliper isn't just going to 'wear out'. The basic function of a caliper is for brake fluid to go through the brake hoses, then to push against the cylinders on the inner edges of the caliper, which in turn the cylinders push in against the brake pads. The brake pads push against the rotors, not the caliper. from what it sounds like, I think that the caliper may have a cylinder that is stuck out causing the dragging noise. Bottom line: Take it to someone else and get a second opinion. It sounds like this shop might be jerking you around.
A brisk walk through the countryside.Nice question!
making a good investment which would cover me for the rest of my life flying to paris for some shopping long walks in the park with my soul mate having a picnic at a private beach throwing the party of the year
The best thing to do would be to sell your car and get another brand. Pontiacs are really suckyMine breaks down every monthand in the long run it will save money cause you wont spend so much money on repairs
My wife I own a 2002 Pontiac Grand AM SE. We had the same problem with our brakes but it was on the front end. We did the same thing you did by replacing all brake pads roders. We ended up changing both calipers. Never had the problems again. They only sell new rebuilt ones through NAPA Auto Parts. They were the cheapest. So you would be better changing the calipers. But at the same time have the back ones checked at the same time the front are being fixed. Good luck. -Mr.Richey
