Answer:

Natural hoof care and barefoot trimming is growing in popularity and there are certainly some positive results. I don't do it myself, so my response is that of someone on the outside looking in. I find the proponents somewhat 'evangelical', which puts me off a bit; I also wish that it was described as booted rather than barefoot, as most horses are not ridden with 'bare' hooves but with boots on. I really admire the the trimming and hoof care techniques.
All three of my horse's are left barefoot. The most change I've seen is in my gelding. When I very first got him he was in shoes and trimmed regularly the normal way. I never really felt comfortable riding him anywhere outside an arena. He stumbled CONSTANTLY. He was also consistently getting infections in his feet. Finally I switched over to the whole Natural hoof care thing. He has been doing remarkably better. His feet no longer get infections. His stumbles a lot less. He's just all around a new horse if that makes any sense. Basically. I am all for natural hoof care. I would suggest it to anyone. Oh, and I don't ride my horses in boots :D
Don't feel guilty, you DID the right thing. She was very old - and sick. Most people wait too long, since understandably everybody is dreading to make this final decision to have the beloved dog put to sleep - but because of this a lot of pets end up suffering, when it is already too late to help. So it is better to do it before the suffering becomes too much. I had to do it with my dog - and it is incredibly sad, and I still miss him, but I know I did the right thing, there was nothing else to be done. I know you miss your dog and it is very hard. But you gave her a great life. Keep the good memories. ANd when you're ready - get a new dog. That would not be replacing Fergie , no dog can do that, but if you are ready and you want a dog, give a new dog a good home. all the best to you.
