A blog goes out to the world. Anyone can look at it. A press release is written and sent to newspapers and magazines. It is written to promote a person or a company. Newspapers print them on slow news days to fill up the pages. They also spotlight community members who might have done something good for the city.
A Press Release is a news worthy article or write up. Press Releases go out to the world not a blog post. Press Releases can be found on Yahoo News,Google News you name it. They get a bunch of traffic because it's suppose to be news worthy. A Blog post is usually not as important as a Press Release. Depending on the blog you might only get a handful of visists where as a Press Release is distirbuted in mass. Blogs in general don't recieve as much traffic as Press Release sites. You can do both it's not an either or thing. I would say try free Press Release sites like Headlines News.
