Question:

Proper tire inflation?

My tires on my SUV has a max.tire pressure of 44psi cold, My tag on the door pillar is marked at 30psi front/35psi rear. can I air up tires to 40psi for better gas mileage

Answer:

god these are horrible answers. yes you could set the tire pressure higher, but many things can go wrong in doing so. by setting the tire pressure higher it means the tire is more inflated, and when driving fast, theres less of a contact patch on the road, giving you worse traction at high speeds, not to mention if you hit a bump or pothole at high speeds with over inflated tires you might lose traction. i said over inflating because thats what youd be doing. the reason the manufacturer set that psi level is because its the level of psi that will work with that vehicles geometry and weight. anything higher or lower will sacrifice tire life. if you inflated your tires up to 42 psi, youd wear it down the middle and youd have to buy tires sooner because your tires would be bald down the middle and still have tread left on the sides. also setting your tire pressure so close to the max pressure is dangerous. although some tires specificy what the max pressure is (hot air pressure or cold) and you want to stay away from them, atleast 5 psi. because when your driving a lot, lets say going fast on the freeway or just anything over a mile. your air pressure goes up because the air expands. even though you set the tire pressure to lets say 40 psi when it was cold, its only measuring the pressure that given amount of air is putting on your gauge, when the tire heats up, the air expands raising your pressure. which if its too close to the max pressure could be dangerous, and wear your tires prematurely. if you do want to play with your tire pressure you can try in increments of 3 psi.
sure can but what one needs to know is how to read tire wear and adjust for it really ive been running 40 pounds in my tires since the 70s' when the we had the gas crunch ok so type into search box how to read tire wear tire pressures on door is what is recommended and is best but even then one must know how to read tire wear signs to get what one can out of tires each tire type or brand might wears different not every person drives the same and types of roads we drive on all factor into tire wear car that has 5 people in it or one little person tires wil wear different. learn how to check tires for wear wil help plus knowing which fuels your car needs also way to check that is by filling with highest octane at place you like stop at most set mileage drive til it need to be refilled at sam eplac euse next lower octane and set mileage and one that gets you th emost miles right one to use at that place then you go to next place up street do same thing since not all fuels the same either do this with two places going away from home and two places going to home its like say my nissan gets great mileage with shell highh octane but same mileage with mobil regular i then know two types my car gets the best mileage with
are you like in hell ?
Yes, but keep the ration of the pressure difference - go 36psi front, 42psi rear.
