Question:

Pros and Cons: Metal, Ceramic, or Invisalign Braces?

I‘m 13 and my front teeth are big and stick out. Two teeth next to my middle front teeth are crowded in. Do you think I should get metal, ceramic, or Invisalign braces? All of my teeth are perfect except for the front four. Do you think I can just get braces for the front four and not the other ones? I don‘t wanna look ugly, but I don‘t want to got to the ortho so often either. Which kind of braces should I get that are pretty and fast. What are the pros and cons of each kind of braces? How many years do you think it will take for each one?

Answer:

Well if I were you, I would go with ceramic braces because they are less noticable but do the same thing as traditional braces. Braces work faster than Invisalign, I was a candiadte for both and for me, Invisalign is going to take 7 months longer than braces would (braces 1 year, Invisalign 1.7 years). It will also be cheaper so your parents don't need to be paying so much money for it as Invisalign is not covered under insurance. If I was 13 I would have totally gone with ceramics as everyone your age is getting braces and it is kind of the norm. You can still get the colorful rubber bands if you choose to or go with clear to make it ft into the look of your teeth. Invisalign takes too much work and isn't good for people your age when it comes to eating lunch and all that. You have to pop them out, eat, then brush and floss and the pop them back in. Do you want to do that at school? You also need to wear them for 20-22 hours a day so you need to be dedicated. Invisalign is not as invisible as they lead you to believe. You will need to get attachments on your teeth, I have 7! They are tooth colored bumps, and your teeth sound kind of like mine, my issues are all in my front 4 teeth meaning that you could get an attachment on the one next to your front tooth depending on how they need to move your front teeth. If you have a bite problem, you will also need 4 brackets on the side to use elastics with.
I have to go for the metal braces just because they are more reliable then Invisalign from what I've seen. Metal braces are normal in teenagers so it's not like you will be the only one with them. It's usually a month to month basis that you get seen at the orthodontist and they seem more effective in the long run because metal braces keep your teeth at a constant place while trying to straighten the others. Invisalign from what i've heard takes longer because even though people are told to wear them for a certain amount of time the truth is everyone cheats and will probably only wear them once in a while, only at night, forget about them, loose them, break them and have to wait for a replacement while the progress your teeth have made so far is lost because teeth shift quickly. I had metal braces and it's not much of a hassle. I got my braces when I was 14 and had them on for 3 years. I have a friend who went for invisalign. We are both 19 now and she isn't nearly done, and has spent sooo much more money then my parents did!
