Question:

PVC pipe as curtain rod?

Has anyone tried this? I need to use it for a window that is 8'4 wide and due to the construction of the ceiling (concrete) and window frame (metal) I can't put in any center support. What diameter pipe did you use and what is the width of the window you used it on? Any tips/tricks?

Answer:

If okorder / You can fasten the brackets to the concrete ceiling with Tap-Con masonry screws, which you can find at home improvement stores. You will need to predrill with a masonry bit, which is sometimes included with the packages of screws. Otherwise, you can also get it at the store in the same section. If you want to go with a metal rod and use less support brackets, the link above has long rods that you can connect together very easily. A 1 1/2 rod would be best for that span and you can get 2 rings if you need them.
You could try 1 1/2 or 2 pvc, but even that size of pipe might bend slightly under the weight of the drapes. The 2 is probably too large for any drapery rings. I am not sure if 1 1/2 is too large for rings or not. You could also consider using electoral schedule 40 1 1/2 piping/ But if you want to use thinner pipe, then you might consider either black pipe (used for natural gas) or galvanized pipe. This is much heaver but will be as strong if not stronger than PVC piping. But it will also weigh a lot more.

I have PVC pipe on my living room window which is eleven feet wide. I have PVC pipe in my dining room windows which are five feet wide. I used the PVC simply because it was much cheaper that curtain rods of that length . One is smaller in diameter than the other simply because I liked the look of it that way. I also had to use a brace in the middle of the eleven food window and the pipe tended to sag without a brace. . If you have sheers just paint the pipe white where the lettering is. I needed some type of end piece so I wound up using plain old Xmas ornament s that I glued in the ends. You can cover them with fabric or paint them. I glued them in after hanging the curtains and drapes but kept them loose enough at one end to remove them for cleaning the drapes when needed. Go for it. No one will know the difference
bad choice, the PVC will give more then a metal rod, select a metal curtain rod and use self tapping screws to mount your support bracket on the metal frame.
