Question about Backspacing (Car Wheels)?

The way I understand it, backspacing will effect how far out/in you wheels are when on the car. So if I decrease my backspacing, my wheels will stick out farther? If so is this safe to do? I just want the wheels flush with the body of the car.

Answer:

The further you push the wheel out the faster the wheel bearings wear out. That is a fact Normally with the stock wheels both front ball joints line-up with the center of the tire where it meets the ground. If you have struts the center of the strut lines up with the center of the tire on the ground.
Back spacing, as I have it, is the distance between the hub of the rim and the backside of the fenderwell. If you change the backset of the rim, it will be farther out against the fender or more toward the inner fenderwell. I think if you decrease your backspacing, it will cause you wheel to stick out farther against the fender. The best way to check this is to consult your local speed shop and they will confirm your problem. Hope this helps a little.
if you wish the wheels to stick out further, you must add a spacer/s or move the wheel centre closer to the back of the rim, adding small thickness spacers will not damage your wheel brg, but for the best look keep the back spacing the same and buy rims that are wider along with new rubber.
