Question about farm silos...?

I understand a silo is generally used for storing farm products most commonly wheat, grain, corn, or milk. But can you store other stuff in there? And how would you store milk; do you put refrigerators in there? Do you store your corn/grain/wheat after it's just been harvested, or in a box after you've fixed it up (made it flour, etc)? Also, why are silos built so tall? Would you have quot;floorsquot; along the walls, with a ladder to get to things stored higher up? And what good would that do if something was too heavy to carry up and down a ladder? Can you have a staircase that wraps around the wall like in medieval watchtowers in RPG games?Sorry for so many questions at once XD I'm really curious.

Farm Silos
old silos were made of wood banded together with iron straps and turn buckles, or concrete, or bricks, or the clay blocks you are speaking of. Contact any brick manufacture in your area and explain what you would like. They can either supply you with them or tell you where to get them...It has been a long time since I have seen new ones though. You may have to buy them from a used brick sales place. Good luck
Well it depends on where you are at and what silo you are looking at. Those big blue silos, or silos made out of cement blocks usually contain fermented feeds such as chopped up hay, corn (entire plant), or high moisture corn (grain harvested early). Silos made out of corrugated metal usually contain dry grains. While on the farm milk is stored in large refridgerated tanks which look like a silo on its side. However milk must be moved off-farm within 24 hours so you will never see those get as big as a silo. Once you get to the milk processing plant they might put the milk in silos. In silos designed for fermented feeds there is a large fan at the bottom that shoots the feed up towards the top where it lands on the old feed. To unload there is a machine that scrapes the feed off the top and sends it down a tube towards where it is needed. Due to the tendency for these machines to break down silos are going out of style in favor of plastic bags. NEVER go inside a blue or cement silo. They are designed to be air tight so the bacteria can ferment the feed. If you want to make an inside staircase you need to ensure that you have proper ventilation.
Very good curiosity. Basically, Siolo means storage Bin. It is used to store even non agricultural products like cement, chemicals, urea etc. etc. how would you store milk; do you put refrigerators in there? Milk is processed in bigger Stainless steel tanks after pasteurization and homogenization. After pasteurization milk can stay as it is for normal room temperatures so that no air conditioning is required. Do you store your corn/grain/wheat after it's just been harvested, or in a box after you've fixed it up (made it flour, etc)? No. Food grains are not store immediately after harvesting. Its moisture content is reduced to certain level and after many other processes like screening, grading, chemical treating etc. then the grains are stored. why are silos built so tall? It is easy to handle the storage. The grains are filled with air flow (blower) from top of the silo and can be remove from silo with gravity. Secondly, land area consumed is less for big amt. of storage. Would you have floors along the walls, with a ladder to get to things stored higher up? No. Can you have a staircase that wraps around the wall like in medieval watchtowers in RPG games? yes just to repair and maintenance. Sorry for so many questions at once XD I'm really curious. No. problem. Your curiosity is genuine and anybody who knows it will surely happy to answer. KEEP IT UP !!! Best wishes and regards.
