Question about my air intake?

Right before my mass airflow sensor, there is some sort of honeycomb thing that does nothing on my v6, the same thing can be found in a Cummins turbo Diesel, I guess its there to restrict air? I took it out, so there is more airflow to my vehicle. So what is the purpose of that thing?

This Site Might Help You. RE: are hvac copper tubing copper pipe interchangable ?
HVAC copper tubing can be used for plumbing installations. Copper pipe or tubing sold for plumbing use cannot be used for HVAC. The piping used for HVAC is purged at the factory and filled with nitrogen to keep it uncontaminated. Regular copper tubing or piping not purged and filled cannot be used on HVAC refrigeration systems
i'm not exactly sure but it could possibly be to catch debris. but as i said i'm not very sure
Air flow straightener used to obtain a more accurate flow reading for the mass flow computation.
A honeycomb thing if it is what i think it is it was intended to catch debris being sucked through the air intake so it couldn't get to the engine. It does restrict airflow but helps protect the engine.
