Question about tire sizes?

Alright so my tire size is 225/45/17. Do I have to get a tire that is 225 and that is the only thing that will fit my rim? Or will like, 205 or other sizes fit as well?

Answer:

you can put any size on it as long as its 17 inch rim personal preference but keep in mind if you get a different size it will change the mph the spedometer reads and your actuall speed. Also keep the same size on the front or back if two different sizes are on the front and its a front wheel drive vehicle it will damage the transmission
225 is the width of the tire, which is usually the width of the wheel as well. So no. you have to get 225. However, the second number can be different, its just tire height (distance from the outer wheel to the top of the tire). BTW- what is oops talking about? lol
The tires will, for the most part work fine. The problem that comes to my mind is that while the studded tires on the front (drive) tires will really help you go on slick surfaces, stopping can be hazardous since the front will have excellent traction, the rear won't. This could easily cause the car to spin around when trying to stop quickly on that same slick surface. My advice is four studded or no studded on a front wheel drive.
You should have some flexibility what you can fit. If you're looking to put a 205 on the wheel that currently has a 225, it might work, though I would check a major local tire shop for more information since every vehicle and wheel is different.
