Question:

RC Aircraft Battery Help?

I need some advice on upgrading the electrical power on my .46 Hobbico Nexstar. Here's the situation: the battery I'm using right now is a Futaba 4 cell 4.8v that's about 3 years old. But it's kind of on its last legs- I charged it throughout the night, but it was dead when I got to the field. I still was able to quik-charge it up to 5.4 volts, and got 3 short flights in without any trouble. Now I charged it fully, and the reading is 5.52. Some people say it's the battery- others say it's the at-home charger (3 years old). Either way, I want to be sure that I'm not going to have one of those instances where the plane loses electrical power in midair and you can only watch helplessly as it keeps on going. What kind of battery should I go with? Charger?

Answer:

Get two new battery packs, a good quality charger, AND a battery cycler. The problem with most rechargables is 'partial charge memory'. NiCad or NiMH battery packs usually never really get totally discharged after a series of flying and begin to develop a short charge or partial charge memory. Useful output diminishes over time and the packs require CYCLING. Cycling is a regimen of totally discharging and recharging 3X. DO NOT TOTALLY DISCARGE LiPo packs, you'll kill them. Only do this to NiCad and NiMH. You can make a cheap discharger from a few 6vdc or 12vdc automotive turnsignal bulbs soldered to gether in parallel with a pack connector. Just plug it in and the bulbs will draw down all the power in your packs before recharging fully with your new peak charger. Hobbico has a nice little unit called a Field Charger. Good Luck! Nosedive
certainly the only technical subject that i will confirm is an argument of radio selection. The government have superior section fifty one to contain a close-by mountain so any administration is going to must be carried out at a distance maximum in all danger utilising the digital camera on the plane. i think of a powered glider might journey your purposes better than a powered AC except it replaced into electric powered the style AC engines are VERY noisy. you ought to no longer get picked up via radar because of the fact your aim is particularly small seek radar targets are normally 3 metres sq. and your aim would be very slow shifting so the objective detector will normally filter out you out. I doubt that they are utilising anti-artillery radar so a small slow shifting merely won't happen. additionally i might launch between 04:00 hrs and sunrise it is normally the time while maximum all of us is at their lowest interest span. I doubt that they are going to shoot down your plane or throw you backside in penal complex you have achievable deniability because of the distances in touch, certainly your honour my plane merely have been given removed from me Its obtainable yet as with any issues approximately section fifty one there are dangers in touch.
