Question:

Re-felting pool table - cloth blend question?

I‘ve read that when re-felting a pool table, a wool/nylon blend is the best fabric to use. We have a slate table we got for free recently that desperately needs to be re-felted before being used, but we‘re also on a tight budget for the foreseeable future. I‘ve found some more affordable pool table cloth online, but it‘s 100% polyester. I realize it will likely change how the balls roll and generally how well the table can be played on, compared to the higher end cloth, but just how drastic of difference would it be? Will it suck to play on the cheaper fabric? The balls roll too slow, or the fabric not last very long in general? The difference in price is pretty much double for the nylon/wool, but I want to make sure I‘m not wasting money on pure crap.

Answer:

Depending on exactly what your current cloth condition is, you might be able to flip it over and use the other side. That's about as inexpensive as you can get. I've never bought polyester cloth before but my gut instinct says I wouldn't like it in the least. Another idea is to find a pool hall that is re-clothing their tables. If they are just throwing away the old cloths you might find one that is acceptable for you and again the price is right. And remember to check the bottom side. Edit: I meant the other side of the cloth not the slate. Anyways, if it's that bad condition then it's toast. Try the pool halls. Depending on how busy they are, they are usually doing a re-felt every once and a while.
I would never recommend a 100% polyester blend to a home table owner, and in all honesty, its not going to hold up any better under normal casual playing circumstances than more popular wool/nylon blends. While it isn't necessary to go all out and recover your table with a tournament grade worsted cloth like Milliken SuperPro or Simonis, you would do well to recover with respected brand like Championship. They make product called Invitational that is a very durable wool/nylon blend and would last for years and years under normal casual playing conditions. It also won't show the burns and bruises that worsted and polyester cloth would show. Most all of your respected online retailers and local pool table retailers will carry a woolen blend like the Championship Invitational. In the long run, it is a small price to pay for the years of enjoyment that you'll get from your pool table.
