Question:

Recycle aluminum (?) lined paper food pouches?

I use a lot of these at home. They are a paper food pouch with what looks like a thin aluminum coating on the inside. Some products in them are Carnation Instant Breakfast, Nestle hot cocoa mixes, I think the cheese pack in Kraft Mac n Cheese, too.Can I recycle these? Do I throw them in with the paper?

The eco answer? You should not place paper coated with aluminum in your home recycling cart―it should go in your garbage cart. Paper mills that process recovered paper require clean paper that is free of contaminants, including metal (such as aluminum foil), food and plastic. It's a little confusing because aluminum foil is recyclable in some areas and paper is recyclable in most areas. However, the down and dirty is that when these items can't be separated because they are bonded together, they become a type of product that isn't recyclable. By the way, paper mills can remove common contaminants such as staples and paper clips. It's not necessary to remove them before recycling the paper, although you can remove and reuse paper clips!
