Question:

Redoing bathroom components (toilet/vanity/flooring). What order?

Hello,We are redoing parts of our 2 bathrooms. We are replacing the flooring, the toilet, and the vanity, however we are not doing anything with the showers/tubs. From what I've read you should do the flooring before you do the toilet, but wouldn't you want to do the vanity before you do the flooring? We will most likely be having a professional do the vanity and toilet, however we plan on doing the flooring ourselves. So would we have to have the professional do the vanities, then we do the flooring, then have them come back another day to do the toilets? Any insight is greatly appreciated. Thank you!

Answer:

Do the vanity first, then the floor and then the toilet. If you can do a floor yourself, you can install a vanity and if you can install a vanity and a floor you are certainly capable of installing a toilet. Good luck with your project.
Redoing Bathroom Floor
If you are putting in a wood cabinet type vanity, you could do it before the floor. If you're doing a pedestal sink, you have to do the floor first. Some modern vanities have 'furniture style' base cabinets, also have to sit on top of a finished floor. So pick your vanity first, then you'll know if the floor has to go in first. The toilet has to sit on top of what ever flooring you have, it must go LAST. Replacing a vanity is easier than tiling a floor. In depends on the sink installation. I'd do that in a heartbeat on my own. Tile - not so much. I don't own or want to rent a wet saw to cut tile. I can imagine spending as much as it cost to hire someone. But if you've done tile before, go for it. I've removed and installed new bath fixtures. Removing was more trouble than the install (curses to Moen!) Faucets and drains were surprisingly easy.
I've remodelled a whole bunch of bathrooms in my own houses and in other peoples (my ex boyfriend was a kitchen and bath remodelling contractor and I worked with him.) ALWAYS ALWAYS ALWAYS do ALL the flooring first, under the toilet AND the vanity. The problem with tiling or putting any flooring around the toilet or vanity is that you (or the future homeowner) will have a horrible time trying to replace either one, and those items always need to be replaced eventually. Toilets and vanity all vary widely in their footprints and you will never be able to match and patch the flooring around any new one. Also, flooring seals up the floor and will help prevent water damage to the subfloor and framing structures below. Flooring looks bogus and amateurish when it is installed up to rather than underneath installed fixtures. Ignore the people who are telling you to install flooring AROUND anything except the tub. They are completely wrong.
The toilet will have a specific footprint which will have to be surrounded by the tile (I'm assuming tile flooring). So the toilet would have to be installed first, then the flooring would be properly laid around it as necessary. The flooring should be last to accommodate any footprint changes you do including the vanity placement and size as well. Any painitng or ceiling work should be done before the floor as well. I'd do the floor last.
