Question:

Repeated Axle breakage?

I have a Trek 4100 Bike, and I‘ve gone through two axles this week. The first snapped altogether, the second bent in less than two hours of riding. The axle is a QR 10 X 146mm. I‘ve never had this problem before, and I‘m not riding this bike very rough - I‘m not jumping the bike (with the exception of the 8 hops which are often unavoidable in cross country riding). I‘ve ridden this way for years and never had a problem until this bike.any ideas as to the problem and possible solutions?

Like He Said Made in China! Just Get a New Hub, Be a Little Spoiled With It Too. Buy a Higher Quality Axle Next Time.
Given your size and and riding style the axles shouldn't be breaking so quickly. Have you examined your frame? Axle breakage could be caused by alignment issues in the frame. Are the rear dropouts level? Is there flex in the rear triangle that the axle is trying to resist when you are riding? Maybe a small break you haven't noticed? Does the rear wheel fit well in the dropouts or does the skewer pull the frame closed? If you frame seems fine, maybe you have just been the victim of two cheap axles. Make sure the next is a quality Cromoly replacement. Good luck!
