Question:

Replace a furnace due to crack of the heat exchanger?

To replace the heat exchange it will cost me 850$ to fix.I have a 1996 Dettson model GMP100-3Should just fix it? and wait on buying a new furnace? a new furnace will come to 5000$.I am thinking that fixing it should buy me 2 more years or so and then I will buy a new furnace.what do you think?

Answer:

Yes, it is a Goodman 100,000 btu unit with a 3 ton blower drive, 80% efficient when new. A new furnace install should be $2000 + or - . You may want to shop around. Also, since all furnaces now come with a 20 year warranty on the heat exchanger, you may want to check with Goodman...you will need the serial number which designates the month/year of mfg.
We don't know where you are (climate, brands sold, currency you are referring to), what kind of fuel, how big the house is. Although we are in the US, there was a 1 year old Dettson in the house we bought - it turned-out to be a Canadian brand, but was in actuality assembled in Mexico of multi-national parts - it broke-down at least twice a season which got tiresome and expensive so we replaced with a top-of-the-line Lennox: computer controlled, 16 speed blowers, AC, stainless heat exchanger, etc.,etc..........utilizing the existing ductwork, cooling coil, and thermostat, it was less than $3200 US installed, 10 yr warranty (2000 sq ft house). So your $5000 estimate seems high (is that US dollars or ??). If you can swing the deal, I wouldn't put more money into a 16 year-old unit . . . . I'd go for a new one, leading brand, with a long warranty. Even if your old one was energy efficient for 1996, a new one will be even more efficient and help pay for itself.
Goodman Heat Exchanger
You need parts 8,10 and 11 to make this repair. Couple of hours . Also if your the original home owner and could prove it was installed is 1997 you would still be under the factory warranty for 15 years on the heat exchanger only which would be free. Associated parts would be extra and ofcourse labor
Sounds about right to me. That will give you time to plan and put aside for it. Papaw
