Question:

Replaced the Radiator on my accord last week, and this week the water pump failed. Are they related?

I have a Honda Accord, and last week I replaced the Radiotor, due to a leak. This week the Water pump broke, it was making a ver loud noise and major leak, when I opened the rad, basically all the fluid was drained.Do you think the two are related? or do you think when the Rad was replaced it was not done properly which caused the water pump to break? Thanks.

Answer:

Tough question but lemme give it a shot. The radiator would probably not have cause the water pump issue unless there was a very large obstruction that took out the impeller of the pump. If that were the case then it would have been possibly related. Otherwise, I would not suspect that. The radiator leak fix might have suddenly ensured that there was enough water in the system to keep the water line above the pump. If you ran the system dry, the pump could have given out due to running dry. To really answer the question, you might need to know how the pump failed. Tough one though. I am trying to think exactly how other than mentioned above, the repair could have taken out your water pump and I am stumped. When I have had issues with cooling and have abused the system by overheating, I have had to replace multiple components in the past. Simply due to heat abuse; never good on an engine or components.
Yes they are related. First why did you replace the radiator if their was a hole in it it could have drained out most of the fluid and burned up the pump.
If okorder
The only way they are related is that they both have coolant circulating through them...frankly it is unlikely the replaced radiator had anything to do with it, but if you found the leaking radiator when the steam started curling up from under your hood, then it is possible that gave the water pump that extra reason to fail.. bable really.
If your radiator went then it is highly likely that regular maintenance ie rad flushing, fluid changes have not been taking place. Water pump will have nothing to do with the rad, unless when rad was leaking you ran vehicle with no lubrication (water-antifreeze mix) to water pump. The pump will just seize up or crack. These issues are probably just age related. If the rad was defective or you had coolant issues, the lights on your dash would indicate low fluid engine overheat of course you wouldn't drive it then. Everybody knows what a dummy light is for, right.
