Question:

Reviving my apartment's carpet?

I live with my husband and our toddler son in a decent sized three bedroom apartment, but I am having a little problem...our carpet is looking very sad. It is smushed down in higher traffic areas and I am not sure how to revive it. I vacuum regularly, and I also clean it monthly with my upright shampooer, but it isn't really helping. Any suggestions?

Answer:

Matted Carpet
Rentals use inexpensive carpet and once it's matted down, it's on it's last leg. If you're shampooing and vacuuming regularly that's all you can do. Put a nice runner over the smushed areas. Spend the $150 on something nice you can take when you move.
I have worked in property management for almost four years. We come across situations like this all the time. Tell the property manager about it. Let them know you regularly vacuum and shampoo. Ask if they can change them out for you. We get a five year warranty on our carpets. Normally, we'll replace them after they reach the five year mark and the residnet moves out. If a resident asks, we will change them if the carpets are five years old and the residents have signed a new lease.
Maybe using the shampooer on it so often is taking the life out of your carpet. It's good to use once in awhile, but I think a regular vacuuming would do the job. As for getting your carpet perked back up- there are attachments you can buy- some look like rakes and it will plush the carpet back up (it will only work if you have plush carpeting).
