Question:

Safety tips while using Lye (sodium hydroxide)?

I will be using lye for the first time to do a science project. I understand that this substance is extremely lethal in some cases. I was hoping you could answer a few questions regarding staying safe while using lye.1. How do i dispose of lye properly?2. Should I use gloves and goggles or are these unnecessary to use while handling lye.3. What things should I not put near lye that would make it more dangerous? Thanks:) I'm really scared to use it and id like to take all the necessary precautions.

Answer:

Maybe try white vinegar or watered down white vinegar.
I know this sounds fake or corny, but ants cannot digest oatmeal and if you spread oatmeal around the mound it will kill them and not just drive them away to another spot. Also, oatmeal is not bad for fish.
The main things your taught through health and saftey is to wear strong gloves when emptying the grass box as there could be anything in it and finnaly wear ear defenders as mowers are usually a high level of decibels and can damage your hearing When mowing steep banks goa across them not up and down them and dont mow in wet weather else youll ruin your grass! Hope this helps
To get rid of ants naturally use mint leaves or bay leaves. For some reason ants can't stand the smell of those two herbs. Try spreading those leaves around the mounds. Otherwise you will have to dig the mounds out and kill the queen. This will be exceptionally hard though seeing the fire ants get aggitated rather quickly and they swarm and bite anything that moves. While you are digging have a water hose running into the hole that you are digging that way they can't swarm. They will be washed away into the pond and will be food for your fish. Don't use chemicals though for it will likely kill or sicken your fish. If you are allergic to the bite and sting of a fire ant then just stay away from them and let a professional take care of it. It might cost you a few bucks but, at least it will be taken care of. I hope these few ideas help. Good luck.
Bleach? Bleach is an all-around good varmint killer. Bleach will kill most anything, including color in fabrics. :D
