Question:

Scared of Breaking off Brackets.! Help?

I just got braces on 5 days ago and I have been worrying about what to eat. All I eat is soup (my teeth don't really hurt anymore) and mash potatoes. Today I ate 3 raspberries and I find it hard to eat without feeling like I am going to break a bracket. Tonight I am having some Tofu please give me some tips on where to chew in my mouth without really touching the bracket. I have to have my braces on for 2 years. Help so scared of halting the process!!! lt;3 lt;3 lt;3

Answer:

Ha! I'm the queen of breaking brackets. My record is three at once :D But, onto your question, don't be too paranoid. You can eat pretty much anything and they'll stick on there. When I broke brackets (which I did often when I had braces) it was usually on stuff like beef jerky or carmel. Once I broke one eating a Push-Up Pop, too, but I don't know how reliable those things are anyway. Another thing--breaking brackets isn't very bad. I would break some and then just leave them like that until my next ortho visit. It didn't do anything--even if it was totally the wrong thing to do. All you need to do is not tear at rough foods too hard and if you do break a bracket, go to your ortho and get it stuck back on. It's no problem.
They tell you that everything you eat is going to break them but that's a gross exaggeration. Trust me. I'm a 3-year orthodontia veteran myself (: I eat everything I normally would, except for apples and corn on the cob, which i have to cut up. Really, just focus on chewing on your back teeth. If you're like me, yes some of those brackets will break. It's just a fact, but it's better to break a back one than a front one because the back brackets don't lose as much hold. If you're REALLY afraid, just cut food up into smaller pieces. I eat popcorn, chew gum, bite into Blow Pops, and basically break every rule, and I've only broken 2 brackets (both in the back; they've now been reinforced). You'll be fine and have a gorgeous smile in no time!
Hey, Don't worry too much. It is very hard to break off a bracket (and if you do, it isn't a huge deal). For chewing purposes, chew hard things with your back teeth. Cut your food into smaller pieces so you don't bite into things. For example, cut up apples and take corn off the cob. Did your orthodontist give you a list of foods to avoid? Follow that and use your best judgement. Braces take some time to get used to, but soon they will feel normal! Good luck and enjoy your tofu! Laurie
you probably did the mind-blowing element by employing putting wax over it. which could save it from shifting around on the cord. i could call the orthodontist's place of work and merely leave a msg. on the answering device. even even with the indisputable fact that they are out of the place of work they could merely be checking the msg.'s. and if no longer they are going to call you as quickly as they open. stable luck
As long as your ortho did a good job of putting the brackets on, they shouldn't break. You can eat just about anything (you should have gotten a list of things to avoid though). Things that are on the thougher side you might want to chew more carefully if you're worried but having things break shouldn't be a problem
