Question:

Seemingly infinite hole in historic home?

So, my mom used to live in this giant house in ClevelandLike, giantShe always tells this story of this rectangular hole next to the laundry chute (also next to an old disconnected elevator) that seemed to never endThey shined flashlights, dropped things down it, and even tried to fish out clothes that someone mistakenly dropped down there instead of the laundry chuteNever could they find a bottom to this holeWhat could it be for? I thought maybe something involving a safety thing for the elevatorAny ideas? Hopefully some architect/historian? Please?

Answer:

The hole might have been an original elevator shaft, a shaft for a dumbwaiter, a chimney, a garbage chute, or possibly even provisions for a hidden way out of the house itself; you didn't say how old the house was, so these are just likely possibilitiesWhatever it's intended purpose, it's not an infinite shaft or even a bottomless shaft since a truly bottomless shaft is a physical impossibilityIt might be very deep or it may have a bottom that's not all that deep but sound absorbing like sand, mud, or even waterNot really a paranormal matter.
It always amazes me that someone will live month after month after month in a place they seem to consider uninhabitable and yet continue to stay and stew in their own juicesThey don't seem to remember that they can simply document significant problems and use them to break the lease and find a decent place to livePeople like this seem to thrive on complaining and playing the victim.
