Question:

Serial cable with Tivo and Comcast cable box?

I want to hook up my tivo with my comcast cable box. The directions say to use a serial cable to connect the two. The cable they show has a 9-pin connector on one end and what looks like a headphone sized jack on the other. Both my tivo and cable box have the headphone-like jack. What can I use to connect the two?

Answer:

The Tivo uses either IR (like your remote) transmitters to change the channel on your digital cable box, or if the cable box supports it a serial (plug in) input. Both are easy to setup, the only problem I've ever had is the IR sometimes gets messed up and will not turn the channel (happens like once in a hundred times). Then once you tell Tivo your cable company and where you live it will download your local listings for the channels you receive so it can record your shows.
You can only use the serial cable with a DCT2000 series box. If it has no 9pin serial port, your only option is to use the IR blaster for TiVo to control the cable box.
