I always use the flat side for cooking,to ward off bad thoughts,put it over your head and make sure the shiny side is on the outside.
LOLIn answer to the first part of your question, the dull side must be placed next to your skin which then enables the shiny side to reflect all bad thoughts and alien influences back at 'em In using the foil for cooking, it doesn't matter what side is up.

Well I hear armadillo hats work well with the alien problem but as for cooking, the shiny side works best for reflecting the light to cookHowever the dull side is a bit more non stick
