Question:

Should I choose a Cold Air Intake or a Ram-Air Intake?

At what speed does the Ram-Air become more effective than the Cold Air?What will these intakes do for my MPG?(2005-2006 Pontiac GTO, mostly mild driving conditions)

Answer:

The difference between the two is exactly what it sounds like. A cold air intake is when air routed from an area of the engine compartment where air is not heated as much by the engine. Some racers put cooling packs on top of the intake manifold to keep it at a cooler temperature so the air stays at a cooler temperature before entering the combustion chamber and cylinder bore. Cool air burns more efficiently. Ram air is an intake that utilizes the speed of the vehicle to force air into the engine (kind of like a super charger) and only helps while the vehicle is in motion. I hope this helps you out. Personally I would just go with a KN high flow air filter and that will allow air to travel into the engine with less friction. Meaning the engine will pull more air with less work.
