Answer:

Try RIT clothing dye. You should be able to buy it at Joannes craft stores, maybe even Wal-Mart or Target. Do not use it in your Mom's washing machine. It will stain the basin. Use a bucket or something similar, even a cut off milk jug works.
You need to lock the bike through the frame. Sorry for your loss. It is a major pain.
The school security guard was doing something else, and didn't have time to watch the bike rack.

If you didn't lock it through the frame, only under the handlebar part it wouldn't have been more than a few moments with an allen wrench to pull the stem, liberate the bike, reattach the stem, and ride off. Either that or they just pulled the handlebars off the stem, depending on the type of stem. You have to lock your bike through the FRAME of the bike for it to do any good. Two locks are best one to lock the rear tire to the frame of the bike, the other to lock the frame and front tire to the pole or bike rack. U locks, btw, are junk. They're easy to force open, easy to pick, and can be busted with just a carjack or a long pry bar. You want to find a high quality cable lock with a kevlar protected cable, or with the cable wires visible not in a spiral but in straight lines. Those types are brand new on the market and MUCH harder to cut. Most chains, even the supposed new york chains, are also junk. Determined thieves can and will do whatever it takes, but most are rather lazy (or else they'd be working, not stealing.) The more effort it takes thieves, the less likely they'll steal your bike. You can always take the seat off when you go to class, too. That helps dissuade theft much more than you'd think. Hope that helps.
