Question:

Should I get a new carpet?

So my carpet (40 year's of age) was torn out my bedroom this morning. And what do ya knw!! there was a beatiful hardwood floor underneath. I saw all the stains/mold on the carpet and whatnot. Before I had trobule breathing and would wake up with a headace every morning becuase of the smell. However, I can notice a slight difference in smell but not a drastic Now, I can't decide if I should get a new carpet or just live with the hardwood floor that's already there. . I still have to sweep the dust and mop. Getting a brand new carpet is expensive. But with a hardwood floor in the winter it can be a little uncomterable. Any idea's??

Answer:

teh best thing to do would be to keep the hardwood floor and not cover it with a new carpet. during the winter it may be cold to walk on but that has a simple and cheap answer slippers. carpets hold to much dust and mold if not cleaned every two to three months and can do serions harm. its even worse if not throughly and professionaly cleaned at least once a year on top of the monthly cleaning you would have to do. carpets can grow Black mold that has been known to cause Pneumonia and bronchial infections. I know all this because I'm a carpenter and building contractor. CARPETS ARE BAD FOR YOU stick with hard wood floors their cheaper to keep clean and won't kill you
Ummmm.... buy a 8x10 remnant rug at home depot, and put it in the area you walk on the most. Get it in a neutral, or the predominant room color. It might cost you $80.
How about sanding and varnishing the floorboards? It can look so lovely, but it is a chore to do. Hire a sander and maybe sleep in the living room while the varnish dries. Put down a few rugs to keep it warm?
We did the same thing in our bedroom when we first moved in. We refinished the floor and got an area rug for the middle of the room. I keep my slippers right by the side of the bed in the winter to keep my feet warm. Hard wood is so beautiful it's a shame to cover it all up.
Depends on what the hardwood looks like. You can always get a rug to cover up part of the floor you walk on so it is not so cold. If you want a new carpet I would suggest ripping up the hardwood if you know the sub floor is good. If you had mildew and mold it means you had moisture problem probably which could also caused mildew a mold in the hardwood. If you purchase a good quality pad with a new carpet it will take care of the moisture.
