Question:

Should the ceramic tile throughout my house match?

we layed tile after hurricane katrina whats the protocal about if you should tile the whole house with the same color tile my 10 yr old wants different tile then we layed in the bedroom. Does this effect the value of your home or does it matter?

Answer:

If your tiling just the common areas and they are continuous to each other ie : Kitchen, hall, foyer, mudroom etc. I find most people are keeping the continuity as it increases the overall appearance of the area being tiled.(No start and stop,no transitions etc) However, changing pace in the baths and being creative is most usually reccomended. Glad to see you fighting back from Katrina.. Best of luck to you... bellzie
It doesn't have to match. I just put 12 tile down in a 2nd floor bathroom, and it doesn't match the 6 tile in the 1st floor bath. It *is* similar in color, but that's about it. If the tile will be in adjoining rooms, then I would have it match, or at least complement each other - same color/different size, maybe. But if it was at opposite ends of the house, I wouldn't worry. One caveat - a 10 year old may want some sort of tile that you really don't want - electric blue, for example. Sorry, I wouldn't do that at all!
you could certainly vary colors in closed off rooms like a bedroom or bath or two, but i would still stick to something not too outlandish, because too distinctive a color could turn someone off in the future, and tile, unlike carpet, is a real pain to rip out. p.s. there are some things about which it is not wise to give a 10 year old free choice...this may be one of them...try to find other ways to brighten up and decorate the child's room without committing to too different a color on the floor. p.p.s. congrats on your choice of hard flooring...it is so much cleaner and healthier than carpeting
You dont have to match all of the tile. That would be boring. You can vary it but keep it all in the same family. You can have a common theme thru out and still vary it so its not the same in each room. Good Luck! And sorry you're having to deal with the Katrina clean up still! Best of luck you you and yours.
As long as you use neutral colors that flow well together it will not affect the resale value of your home. Now, if you put in a bright orange pattened tile it would negatively affect the value. FYI - Most people don't like tile throughout the WHOLE house. People tend to prefer hardwood or carpets in the bedrooms. If you're not going to be selling your house soon, I wouldn't worry about it.
