Question:

Slingbox Solo with digital cable and set top box?

If i get a slingbox solo, will i be able to control my channels remotely while those at home can watch what they want if we have digital cable and have the slingbox connect to the cable box? I know that if we connect it via direct cable or antenna, it will not work.

Answer:

The SlingBox will send whatever video on its input down the internet. So, if you intend to connect to the same cable box that the family is watching, you will have to watch the same thing on both the local TV and the SlingBox. The option here is to get a second cable box. The SlingBox does come with an optical transmitter so you can control the cable box remotely through the SlingBox. If you upgraded to the SlingBox Pro HD, it would work stand alone with an antenna.
Yes, if you get the Slingbox it own cable box. If you have one cable box, they you and those at home will be limited to the same channel.
The limitation is in your digital cable box. If you are going through a digital cable box, what you watch will be the same as what the people at home watch with the same TV. The slingbox pro and slingbox pro HD has a tuner where you just run a coaxial cable straight from the wall jack to the slingbox. You can also connect them both to directly to the well so you won't interfere with the person at home and when they're not watching, you can hook it up to the set top box, but the solo can't do this. You might even want to search OKorder for the slingbox tuner. This has just the tuner and will be much cheaper than buying the slingox pro or slingbox pro hd. Keep in mind however that in 2012 cable might be going all digital and the slingbox tuner has an analog only tuner.
