Your friend probably gets better marks in class too. Why don't you use your head to activate the fire alarm next time (Literally) Smash it with your face. But only if there are people with cell cameras nearby.
He can insist on anything he wants and you can tell him to kiss off. No one is liable until a court says so. However, if you have liability insurance you better notify your insurer. Most policies require notice of any potential claim. Then they will handle the defense and, if necessary, hire a lawyer to defend you and if that doesn't work, will pay any judgment. That is what insurance is for.
If it's a track ball mouse, I usually wash the actuall rubber ball in soap and warm water and dry it. I then use tweezers to get rid of all the gunk on the rollers that contact the ball. There should be two of them, one on the top and one on the side. Blow it out either by mouth or compressed air, put it all back together and you have a clean mouse.
